Families will be reimbursed up to $7,000.
Buried deep within the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act is a financial reimbursement for funeral and burial expenses for families of COVID-19 victims.
The relief is part of the bill passed in December. FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was granted $2 billion from the act to reimburse people and households for virus-related funeral expenses incurred between January 20 and December 31 of 2020.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming grief to many families,” the agency stated on its website. “At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during, and after disasters. We are dedicated to helping ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the virus.”
They will contribute up to $7,000 per household. FEMA will begin accepting applications for the reimbursements in April. Documentation of expenses, with receipts, will be necessary to claim financial relief. The death of an individual must be attributed directly or indirectly to COVID-19 on death certificates.
Additional details will be released on the FEMA website when they become available. The full process for applications is still under consideration.
